Patches on clothes - what is it?

In the modern sense, the word "patch" means one of the insignia sewn on uniforms.

According to the location of the patches on clothes distinguish:

  • sleeve patches
  • chest patches
  • Patches on pocket/li>
  • Patches on the back
  • semicircular patches sewn on the shoulder
Also, there is a mention of the patch when they talk about chevron - after all, the chevron is also sewn on the clothes, which means it is also a patch.

Generally, when it comes to the patch on the sleeve, it would be better to talk about the chevron, and all other types of badges sewn already called simply patches.

By the method of manufacturing patches differ:

★ made by hand or machine embroidery (embroidered patches);
★ made of plastic or rubber composition on the fabric (the so-called "rubber patches");
★ made by applying paint to fabric;
★ made by application or spun cord.

Rubber patches

These patches are sometimes also called "plastisol". The name received from the name of the applied material. With a good level of manufacturing, quite unpretentious in everyday use. But limited in the number of colors used, especially in the use of "metallic" colors. But at large runs have a low price. Although, this parameter is worse than the patches made by the method of printing on fabric.
The relief of the pattern on such patches is average. Not quite flat, as in "printed", but not as embossed as in embroidered.
If in the manufacture of such products, the manufacturing technology was not appropriately maintained, then the strength of the printed image can be so low that the elements of the pattern begin to fall off in the first days of using the clothes.
In our practice, there were cases when the “rubber” patch brought by the customer began to lose the elements of the design during scanning.

The disadvantages of this technology also include the fact that the composition of the applied material may contain chemical compounds that, long after production, evaporate into the environment. These patches give an unpleasant smell.

Printed patches

Made by applying paint to fabric.
Probably the most inexpensive, especially with large volumes of production. That is due to the low complexity of manufacturing.
With good quality manufacturing such patches, resistance to everyday use is one of the highest.
Printed patch
Probably, besides the fact that these patches are inexpensive, this technology does not have positive sides.
It is impossible to achieve a relief image in such a way; metallized paint can be used, but the wear resistance of such a pattern is low.
Therefore, the use of such technology on the army form has not received.

Patches made of cord or wire

Very effective, but also the most expensive technology for the manufacture of patches.
Drawing is applied by laying out the cord or gimp manually.

The image is obtained in relief. Although with the characteristic signs of handmade.
Usually, patches and badges made with this technology are used only on parade uniforms.
Very beautiful patches, but this insignia is not used in the field.

Jacquard patches

The main advantages of this technology:
✔ The ability to reproduce small elements. Almost like printed patches.
✔ Low cost, but only for large production volumes.
But this technology also has very significant flaws:
✗ The high cost for small production volumes - significantly higher than that of embroidered badges.
✗ Невысокая долговеченость.
✗ A very significant drawback is the impossibility of edging the edge. To get a full-fledged patch, you have to use this technology together with manual edging overlock or machine embroidery.

Embroidered patches

Patches, made by hand or machine embroidery.
Today, this technology is the balance between the spectacular appearance and relatively low cost.
Embroidered image is obtained in relief.
The color scale of the threads used allows you to put on the patch any color and shade. And the use of metallized threads allows you to give the picture a look the same as when using a much more expensive braid.
When use by the method of computer embroidery, a program is created for the embroidery machine, which will be used to apply the pattern.
The creation of such a program is much cheaper than creating a stencil (for printed patches) or a matrix (for plastezol patches). Therefore, the manufacture of a small number of patches will be the most inexpensive.
The durability of the embroidered patches, when using quality embroidery materials, is comparable to printed patches.
One of the problems with the durability of the embroidered patch, when used, is the unraveling of the threads that are used to make the pattern.
This is eliminated by applying to the back of the patch a special adhesive composition that reliably fixes the threads from blooming.
